Find out everything you need to know about history and cultural activities in #Zante #Zakynthos in this travel guide.
Nestled into the hidden cove above is the famous #Navagio, or #Shipwreckbeach, only accessible by boat.
Sometimes, you need to start with the facts. Know where you are going before you start planning #whattodoinzakynthos. Here's a little backdrop before we get planning!
Zakynthos island is a sparkling gem in the waters between the greek and italian mainlands. It is the southern most greek island of the Ionian Sea.
Also known as Zante (Italian), the Venetians gave the nickname 'Il Fiore di Livante' which translates to 'flower of the east'. There's two distinct parts of Zakynthos;
The Eastern Coast and Southern Golf
Busy with tourism, you'll find many hotels, pre-packaged trips, bars, nightlife, and beaches galore.
The Western Coast
You'll find a more quite rustic landscape, where while looking at the sunset, you won't find a thing between you and the African continent. Limestone cliffs, turquoise waters, hilltop villages, modern villas, gorgeous landscapes.
Both offer a variety of activities for any type of traveller and both need to be experienced.
Top Cultural Things To Do:
Byzantine Museum, in Zante Town.
Small museum showcasing religious art and many photos and relics from the island before the devastating earthquake of 1953.
Church of St Dionyssios, in Zante Town.
Patron saint of the island, his tomb lies in this golden church. Interesting to walk through.
Travel Zante Tip:
Across the street from the church you will find street vendors that sell the BEST pastelli (honey and sesame rolls). Amongst other things, but the pastelli is a must-try!
You can also find a shop that sells all sorts of religious items, including prayer bracelets. The gentleman that has the shop is a gem!
Monastery of Anafonitria, in Anafonitria village
Monastery of Theotocos, dedicated to the Virgin Mary where St Dionyssios spent his last days as a monk, and where the story is told he forgave the murderer of his brother.
Byzantian Castle, in Bohali
Ruins of an ancient castle made of stones. Sweeping views of the island.
Travel Zante Tip:
You'll want to visit Bohali at night as well, the views are not to be missed and there are a number of restaurants to choose from (look out for that post soon).
You can find a pretty comprehensive list of Zante monastery's here https://www.zanteisland.com/en/churches-zakynthos.php
Worth mentioning:
Olive Oil Press Musuem, Lithakia
Great way to see how the real deal is made. Of course you can buy delicous EVOO in the gift shop.
Logothetis Farm, Vassilikos.
They offer experiences with olive oil tasting, and private lunch or dining in their gardens (with beauiful views).
Happy travels!
